Trinati Hemingway

My name is Trinati Hemingway, and I’m currently a sophomore at Claflin University, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. I’m originally from Marion, SC, and my career goal is to become a clinical researcher.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern in Savannah, Georgia, working under the guidance of Dr. Sajwan. My internship focused on testing sediment samples from the Savannah River, where I analyzed different elements, particularly calcium, copper, and iron. In addition to this, I conducted experiments at wastewater treatment plants, where I tested influent, effluent, and biosolids for pH levels and various elements. I also worked in a greenhouse on two different experiments: one involving corn, with seven pots containing varying amounts of FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) to test growth, and another with bush beans, using seven pots with different amounts of FGD and chicken manure to observe how these factors affected growth. These diverse experiments provided me with a well-rounded and hands-on experience in environmental research, making it an invaluable learning opportunity.

One of the highlights of my internship was participating in a marine symposium, where I had the amazing chance to see the King and Queen of the Netherlands. This was a unique experience that I never expected, and it added an extra layer of excitement to my summer.

Throughout the internship, I worked closely with Mr. Wess and Mr. Brown, both of whom were incredible mentors. They helped me navigate the challenges of the research and provided invaluable advice that I know will benefit me in my future career. The connections I made during this time, both professionally and personally, are something I truly treasure.

This internship not only reinforced my love for research but also boosted my interest in the field even further. It was an eye-opening experience that has prepared me for different areas of research and professionalism. I would highly recommend this internship program to other students who are passionate about biology and want to gain practical experience in the field.
